Blow Out
America’s
hardest-working stylist, Jonathan Antin, dishes the dirt on products,
impending parenthood, and of course, getting great hair.
By Tara Mattarazzo
When
the Blow Out reunion aired, you had just launched your new product
line and were continuing to run two successful salons. Has life slowed
down since that time?
It’s more hectic than it’s ever been, but I’m not complaining.
It’s all good!
Is
impending marriage and fatherhood changing your perspective on work?
It’s making me enjoy my work more. I’m even more enthusiastic
because there’s another reason for it now.
Last
season, after washing your hair with Evian, you coined the phrase “bangin’
hair,” then created a new water filter to help others achieve the
same results.
Yes. Over the past 20 years, I’ve noticed that fading color, brittle
hair, and dry skin seem to be an ongoing problem. For years, I’ve
been telling my celebrity clients to wash their hair with bottled water
because I noticed how drastic the change can be when using pure water.
My shower filter’s exclusive, patented, two-stage system reduces
chlorine, heavy metals, and harsh chemicals that can damage hair and strip
it of its natural oils and color. Using the Jonathan Product Beauty Water
Shower Purification System is like showering in natural spring water every
day.
In
a relatively short time, Dirt has become hugely popular. Why do think
it’s been so well received?
It’s the first product ever that makes your hair instantly look
and feel like the day after you washed it. In my experience in the salon,
on photo shoots, and at fashion shows, that has always been the most requested
look. Plus, Dirt is versatile and universal—both men and women love
it.
What’s
next for the Jonathan Product line?
Our research and development team is constantly exploring and creating,
so you can definitely expect exciting, innovative new developments from
us in 2006.
Last
season, you were all about loose, romantic finger waves. What trends are
you championing now?
Right now, I’m just letting it all hang out. I’m taking a
little inspiration from the past 30 years, updating the looks, and having
fun with them. That said, I’m not really about trends—I think
hair should always be about what looks good on each individual person.
You
also revealed your plans to launch a Jonathan Institute. Have you made
any further steps toward that, and are you planning to expand into additional
markets?
We have a lot of things in development, and anything is possible.
Will you be returning for a third season of Blow Out?
We’re in talks now, so all I can say is “Watch what happens!”
