Red Alert
By Jessica McCubbin

It might seem like only Hollywood starlets and glam-rock goddesses can pull off red lipstick. And while it’s true that we can’t all wear the same cherry hue, we’ve stumbled upon several glamorous shades that flatter mere mortals—even those whose skin tones are usually red-resistant. To find your perfect shade, look at the inside of your wrist in natural light. If your skin is pinkish with blueish veins, you’re cool and should sample blue-based reds. If your skin has a yellow cast with greenish veins, you’re warm and should try yellow-based or orangey formulas. And in general, lighter skin is enhanced by pinker shades, while olive- and dark-skinned gals should opt for reds with a hint of brick or wine.

Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Satin Lip Colour in Passion ($29; macys.com)
After you swoon over the chic case, you’ll fall in love with this creamy, classic shade.

Giorgio Armani ArmaniSilk Lipstick #12 ($25; giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com)
This rich, deep red can be topped with one of three colorless topcoats—satin, matte, or sparkly.

MAC Ruby Woo Lipstick ($14; maccosmetics.com)
This blue-based hue is reportedly Gwen Stefani’s crimson of choice (the brand’s Russian Red and Dubonnet offer more neutral and vampy takes, respectively).

Kevyn Aucoin the Expert Lip Tint in Bloodroses ($23; kevynaucoin.com)
Blood red and opaque, this intoxicating shade doesn’t look the least bit orange on cool skin tones.

Besame Enchanting Lipstick in Red Hot Red ($18; besamecosmetics.com)
Slightly pink and semimatte, this retro-glam version won’t overwhelm pale-skin girls.

NARS Lipstick in Heat Wave ($23; narscosmetics.com)
This silky, slightly orange shade flatters warm skin tones (for a pinker take, try Gipsy; for a darker effect, check out Fire Down Below).

Kanebo the Lipstick in New Ginza Red (kanebo-international.com)
Creamy and long-lasting, this luxe formula offers high-sheen color without the fuchsia or plummy aftermath.

Dr. Hashuka Fortissimo Lipstick 06 ($36; drhauschka.co.uk, shown)
There’s no such thing as a universally flattering red, but this lustrous neutral comes surprisingly close.

Iman Moisturizing Lipstick in Scandalous ($12.50; imanbeauty.com)
This cool, velvety version glides like buttah and is deep enough to make an impact on darker complexions.

Avon Beyond Color Plumping Lipcolor SPF 15 in Chili ($8; avon.com)
If the price doesn’t win you over, the sweet scent, moisturizing formula, and bold matte hue will.
