Fringe Appeal
By Jennifer Riley

For most beauty addicts, mascara is one of life’s necessities—right up there with food, clothing, and shelter. In fact, in a recent poll, 37 percent of our respondents cited it as their “can’t live without” cosmetic. But it’s also controversial (ask a roomful of women to cite their favorite formula, and instead of consensus, you’ll get a mystifying array of impassioned responses). To simplify the issue, we put more than 50 popular formulas to the test, and our findings surprised even us (the mascara I’d been wearing didn’t even make the list!). Here, our top-ten picks.

Dior Diorshow Mascara ($23; sephora.com)
Many beauty addicts cited this as their favorite body-builder—the closest thing to movie-star lashes short of faux fringe.

L’Oréal Voluminous Full Definition Volume Boosting Mascara ($7; drugstore.com)
This drugstore staple was so widely hailed for its lengthening and thickening abilities that it didn’t receive one negative review.

Shu Mascara Basic ($27; sephora.com)
This long-wearing formula got lots of raves for preserving curl, failing to flake, and giving lashes a natural look.

Lancôme Definicils High Definition Mascara ($21; amazon.com)
Several beauty addicts were downright amazed at its ability to separate, define, and lengthen each lash.

Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara ($5; drugstore.com)
Across the board, testers reported that this glossy formula lasted all day without smearing, clumping, or fading.

Blinc Kiss Me ($24; sephora.com)
Respondents either loved or hated this unique formula; those who loved it were smitten by their newly defined fringe.

Maybelline Full ’N Soft Mascara ($6; drugstore.com)
Unlike formulas that make lashes too stiff, this one gave them a more naturally enhanced look.

Bourjois Volume Glamour ($13; sephora.com)
Testers reported that this formula gave them increased control and precision without sacrificing length or compromising curl.

Almay One-Coat Nourishing Lengthening Mascara ($6; drugstore.com)
Contact-lens wearers especially liked this hypoallergenic formula (one staffer, who has blepharitis, refuses to wear any other brand).

Clarins Fix Mascara ($18; sephora.com)
This waterproof, flake-free formula can be worn alone or, as many testers preferred, layered to lock in other formulas.
