Tea Off
Friday
According to a recent study conducted at King's College in London, drinking three cups of tea a day strengthens bones, prevents heart disease, and hydrates the body just as effectively as water does. On the fragrance front, it also offers a versatile, appealing base for all sorts of aromas, including Bulgari's latest tea-inspired scent, Eau Parfumee Red Tea ($57; sephora.com). While somewhat similar to its predecessor, White Tea, the new unisex fragrance is a spicier, fuller-bodied composition with some unusual notes. After a zesty opening of orange, pepper, and bergamot, Red Tea reveals a sweet heart of fig and walnut before subsiding to warm basenotes of musk and tea.

Although the scent is meant to focus on the unusual combination of African and Chinese red teas, it's the fig-and-walnut pairing that I find most noteworthy. On its own, fig can be thick and sweet, and walnuts reminiscent of trail mix, but when the two are put together, something unexpected happens: The walnut cuts the sweetness of the fig while retaining its own character. The result? An olfactory offering akin to the buttery smooth finish of a fine wine. During the final stages of the fragrance's development, the red tea emerges--a sweet, almost earthy aroma that blends with the musk and leaves a subtle trail on the skin. With its excellent staying power and wear-anytime appeal, Red Tea is a fine addition to the Bulgari family and my new favorite tea-inspired fragrance. --Marlen Harrison
