Project Runway Review: High Flying Fashion
Wednesday
The Challenge: Design an outfit for a hip, international jet-setter (yourself) with a budget of $75.

The Judges:
Linda: 49-year-old designer with 20 years' professional experience; studied at both Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Danielle: 36-year-old writer with 15 years' editorial experience; no formal fashion training.
Amy: 33-year-old stylist with 10 years' experience in television, film, theater, and print.

Linda's Take: Talk about a hot mess! Was there anything about Angela's outfit that worked for this challenge? From the fabrics to the color combinations to the silhouette and the rosettes, everything was off. So it came as no surprise when she was eliminated. Although Vincent's outfit was in keeping with what most people wear when they travel, there was nothing fashionable about it, and the sweater seemed to have some fit problems around the neck. While the judges might question Kayne's taste level, at least he expressed a "point of view," as they're so fond of saying. Laura’s dress was pretty, but I couldn't imagine traveling in it; plus, the fabric's color was way too close to her skin's. This was the fourth--and without doubt, the worst--long, flowing gown with twisted straps that we've seen from Uli. In addition, it didn't travel very well, and I was worried it would get caught in a moving walkway. If Uli wants to make it to the Bryant Park tents, she'll need to start showing the judges that she has more range as a designer. Although Jeffrey was due for a win and his outfit looked well constructed, I'm not a fan of detailing around the crotch on anyone (especially not on Jeffrey). And Michael's ensemble was, once again, impeccable. Although I was a little concerned that the white wouldn't travel well, he looked great in Paris.
Scorecard: Michael 4.5; Laura 3.5; Kayne 2.5; Jeffrey 2; Uli 2; Vincent 1.5; Angela .5.

Danielle's Take: Ding-dong, the witch is gone. And what a way to go out. A hippie-dippie nightmare with a rosette bull's-eye on each butt cheek. To tell you the truth, I think Uli was hot on Angela's heels with that Technicolor yawn of a dress. Ouch. My corneas were singed. And speaking of yawns, how did Vincent manage to sail by with those sleepy, slouchy sacks of humdrum. He didn't come across as a jet-setting man about town; he looked more like a retired gym teacher ready to hit the hay. But picking the duds was easy--deciding which one was my fave was much harder. Laura looked like a modern-day Ginger Grant with her slinky, sexy wrap. Although I tend to like my rock gods on the grungy, underdone side, I have to give props to Jeffrey's outfit--loved the skull and that wax-treated purple wool. Michael's shirt-and-cargo-pants concoction was Kool and the Gang meets Major Tom, but I mean that in a good way. And I don't care what anyone says, I adored the Elvis-Liberace love child that Kayne fashioned for himself. He was just too self-conscious when he tried to pull off the look. By the by, does this whole Paris thing remind anyone else of that Facts of Life movie when the cast jetted off to the City of Lights? Maybe it's just me.
Scorecard: Jeffrey 5; Michael 4.75; Laura 4.5; Kayne 3.75; Vincent 2; Uli 1.75; Angela 0.

Amy's Take: No matter who makes it to Olympus Fashion Week, they'll always have Paris—even Angela, who barely touched down before her hasty au revoir. Angela’s outfit was, of course, a crumpled, craftsy mess (way more homely than haute), so I wasn’t sad to see her go. Nor, obviously, was Jeffrey, whose edgy, rock-star ensemble was one of the episode's standouts. However, as we get closer to determining the final three--and the judges continue to rhapsodize about Jeffrey’s distinct "point of view"--it should be noted that his sense of style is hardly original. Alternative companies like Lip Service and Tripp NYC have been making the same breed of bondage gear for ages, and if you like the look, you're in luck: It's readily available at your local mall (just check out the map in the food court to find the Hot Topic nearest you). Although Vincent's sweater and pants were practical, they were way too casual for any jet-setter, and Laura's wrap dress, though lovely, looked more suitable for a cocktail party than a transatlantic flight. That said, it was more in keeping with the spirit of the assignment than Uli's redundant acid-flashback gown or Kayne's rhinestone-cowboy costume. As for Michael's hip-hop-inspired getup? Crisp, fresh, and ghetto-fabulous. Michael, start designing your Fashion Week collection now!
Scorecard: Jeffrey 4.5; Michael 4.5; Laura 4; Uli 2; Vincent 1.5; Kayne 1; Angela .5.

Judges' Total Tally: Michael 13.75; Laura 12; Jeffrey 11.5; Kayne 7.25; Uli 5.75; Vincent 5; Angela 1.
