Project Runway Review: Fit for a Queen
Thursday
The Challenge: Design an evening gown for Miss USA Tara Conner to wear at the Miss Universe pageant. The dress should make her appear taller and not reveal too much cleavage. Stick with earth tones, not white, and work within a $300 budget.

The Judges:
Linda: 49-year-old designer with 20 years' professional experience; studied at both Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Danielle: 36-year-old writer with 15 years' editorial experience; no formal fashion training.
Amy: 33-year-old stylist with 10 years' experience in television, film, theater, and print.

Linda's Take: I was a bit disappointed with the designs this week. The contestants had a half hour to sketch, but in many cases--especially Angela's--their drawing skills were lacking. Plus, there were major construction flaws, especially with Kayne/Robert's gown. Although I loved the fabric and the bejeweled halter, the seams just didn't lay properly. When the model walked, the boning was bulging out everywhere [boning refers to the plastic or metal rods inserted inside the dress to give it shape]. This could've been remedied by creating a separate attached bustier, but as it was, it looked as if there were cysts growing out of the model's body. In contrast, Laura/Michael's and Keith/Bradley's dresses were quite well made, although the first was cut dangerously low in the back and the second was a little too shapeless through the body. I loved the twisted halter of Uli/Bonnie's dress, but the neckline may've been too low cut given the client's request. While I responded well to the color and silhouette of Vincent/Angela's gown, the seams were puckering, and obviously the epaulets were a mistake. Even more problematic was Malan/Katherine's design--way too much shirring, not to mention the length and unfinished hem. That said, at least Malan/Katherine's concept was noble; Jeffrey/Allison's was a cluttered, unflattering disaster in both concept and execution. In my mind, Jeffrey or Angela should've been Auf'd.
Scorecard: Keith/Bradley 4; Laura/Michael 4; Kayne/Robert 3.5; Uli/Bonnie 3.5; Vincent/Angela 3; Malan/Katherine 1.5; Jeffrey/Allison .5.

Danielle's Take: Oh, the splendid tragedy of Malan! The cruel mother, the constant abandonment. How can Project Runway sail off without him? If there were an Emmy for best supporting drama queen in a reality TV series, I would award it to him. The dewy-eyed, earnest countenance just moments before his piece made its debut, his tear-jerking final words. I'm tempted to think, since he said he's a performance artist, that all this may have been a carefully plotted ruse to earn an exact, elegant 15 minutes of fame. I wish I had the time to do the math. If so, bravo; if not, I want to give him a big hug. I love you, Malan. I'll be your BFF. I believe in you. At the end of the day, of course, Malan sent a literal crap sandwich down the runway, but I'll miss his subtle dramatic flair terribly. Angela, on the other hand, has no subtly; she's as transparent as a sheet of Saran Wrap. Thank you, judges, for contradicting everything that came out of that cur's mouth. Vincent's gown was actually quite a charming Martian masterpiece and would have been more so if Miss Thang hadn't been arguing with him while he was ironing it. Jeffrey's head should have been on the chopping block for yet another messy misstep. For all his trash-talking, I have yet to see him deliver the goods. Kayne's confection was a little overwhelming, but it was the most pageant-worthy and, therefore deserving of the top honor. Uli's piece flowed beautifully, but what really made it pop were the intermittent sparkles placed hither and thither so that when the model moved, unexpected flashes of light emanated from the dress. But for me, Keith was the man of the night with one of the most beautiful Project Runway creations I've ever laid my eyes upon. In the words of Heidi and Uli's people, "Mein Gott." And that rather randy look he shot Heidi put to rest my fears that he might be gay. A beautiful man who makes beautiful dresses and isn't gay? The girl who lands him will be lucky indeed, though of course she will have to deal with that ego of his every day.
Scorecard: Keith/Bradley 5; Uli/Bonnie 4.5; Kayne/Robert 4; Laura/Michael 3.5; Vincent/Angela 3; Jeffrey/Allison 1.5; Malan/Katherine 0.

Amy's Take: Let's just say I don't share Danielle's enthusiasm for Rude Law's sleazy antics. If I had been Tara Conner, I would've paged Parsons security the moment Keith grabbed my boobs. But onto the fashion. Kayne and Robert's gown wasn't flawless by any means, but it succeeded at combining pageant glitz with Hollywood glamour and therefore was the best entry of the evening. The underbust seam of Uli and Bonnie's halter dress was slightly off, but it was still an impressive showing. Keith and Bradley's gown was lovely but far more suitable to the Bryant Park tents than the pageant world. Vincent's column gown would've been elegant had it not been for the epaulets. A simple rhinestone clip on each strap, for example, would've made the model look fashionable instead of like she was taking flight. I found Laura and Michael's dress underwhelming and confusing. Didn't Tara specifically say she didn't want to wear white? And to me, the tank construction coupled with the rhinestones looked very Ice Capades. Although Malan and Katherine's design was a hot mess, there were aspects of it that could've been salvaged, but I saw nothing redeeming about Jeffrey and Allison's crinkly patchwork thing at all. For these reasons, I would've spared Malan and sent Angela packing. And if not Angela, then Jeffrey--both for dreadful design and the fact that he actually used the word feminazi on national TV.
Scorecard: Kayne/Robert 4; Keith/Bradley 3.5; Uli/Bonnie 3.5; Laura/Michael 3; Vincent/Angela 3; Malan/Katherine 1; Jeffrey/Alison .5.

Judges' Total Tally: Keith/Bradley 12.5; Kayne/Robert 11.5; Uli/Bonnie 11.5; Laura/Michael 10.5; Vincent/Angela 9; Jeffrey/Alison 3; Malan/Katherine 2.5.

to get rid of Mulan.I think he would have been good for a lot more drama and I thought he tried
He made a couple of big mistakes but so did the others and Angela seems like such a B!!!
