The Mod Squad
Tuesday
Just when you thought you were safely in the no-buy zone until fall, the Pantone of cosmetics, M.A.C., has whipped up not one, not two, but six dreamy new lines (and we're only talking July and August releases here--come September, you'll need to build an extension on your house to store all the loot). The first two of the late-summer launches are A Muse, a collection that puts a contemporary twist on the '60s gamine look; and Avant Gold, a set of supersilky, refined Mineralized Skinfinishes with a warm matte finish.

A Muse features four Lipsticks ($14 each; maccosmetics.com), from the pale gold Blonde on Blonde to the dusty rose Pink Maribu (my personal favorite is Charm Factor, a peachy coral frost that looks stunning with a bold cat's eye). Meanwhile, the Lipglasses ($14 each) range from the soft frosty yellow Be-In to the rich bronze Factory Made (Lip 65, a light creamy rose, is the one I keep coming back to), along with two Lip pencils ($12 each) in Subculture and Half-Red (the first is ideal for creating a nude Mod-worthy lip without the harsh powderiness of the era's authentic products; the second imparts a rich burgundy stain that's more suited to this fall's berry craze). The line also offers four new Fluidlines ($14.50 each); for a look that's straight out of Quadrophenia, apply the shimmery white Frostlite as a base, the charcoal Lithograph to the lashline and crease, and finish with the jet black ZoomLash ($10).

That said, the real stars of the A Muse collection are the terra cotta–baked Mineralized Eye Shadows ($16.50) and Mineralize Skinfinishes ($24 each). The former are duos of intense pearlized pigment that can be applied wet or dry, and some of the standout pairs include Persona/Screen Vinyl, a silvery white and deep gray that will help you channel your inner Edie Sedgwick; and Heat/Element, a glistening copper-and-russet mix. The latter are powders that impart the same radiance to face and body (pale girls will love Porcelain Pink, while medium and darker skin tones will prefer Shimpagne). And what if you want a matte finish? Well, you're in luck--the Avant Gold line offers five matte Mineralize Skinfinishes that offer all the delicious warmth of A Muse's offerings without the shimmer. My advice? Start building that extension now. --Jennifer Riley
