Fire Away
Sunday
As the weather heats up on Fire Island, sun-worshippers reach for their sweetly scented lotions, spritz their faces with Evian, and savor the salty marine breezes. In homage to this summer ritual, Bond No. 9 has introduced a new fragrance named after the sandy oasis to which throngs of New Yorkers make their annual pilgrimage. Bond's second release this year (the first was Scent of Peace), Fire Island ($110; beautycafe.com) opens with a zesty burst of cardamom, then quickly reveals a heart of bright, sunny neroli (bitter orange blossom) and powdery white musk (thanks to a touch of tuberose, the aroma is almost creamy). From there, the scent subsides to warm skin musk and a hint of sweet patchouli. (On my skin, I found that the most prominent notes came from the neroli and soft musk--think Narciso Rodriguez, Gendarme Carriere, or Mugler Cologne.) Encased in a luminous gold-and-navy bottle, Fire Island is one of the brand's longer-lasting compositions and perfectly captures the spirit of seaside summer days. Just beware: If you wear the fragrance at work, you just might feel the need to don your flip-flops and carry a towel. --Marlen Harrison
