Dream On
Saturday
When Camille Goutal assumed control of her mother's legendary fragrance house in 1999, it represented an olfactory shift for the brand--from richer, headier scents to sheerer, more modern fare. But with its latest release, Annick Goutal Songes (£105; escentual.co.uk), the company has combined the best of both worlds in a single accord that's at once classic and contemporary, full-bodied and ethereal. According to Goutal, the seeds for the scent were born during a romantic trip to the island of Mauritius, where she was inspired by the exotic aroma of the frangipani flower. Shortly thereafter, she and perfumer Isabelle Doyen bottled the sensual memory in Songes (meaning dream or reverie). True to its name, an initial whiff yields intoxicating layers of frangipani, tiare, and jasmine (the latter sings the loudest, making the scent perfect for jasmine lovers). From there, it slowly unfolds to reveal soft middle notes of incense, vanilla, and ylang-ylang, and a warm, long-lasting base of vetiver, sandalwood, amber, and styrax. Although the notes themselves will be enough to tempt most fragrance enthusiasts, the 100ml EDP version offers another dreamy boon--a spherical glass bottle etched with a crescent moon and wrapped with a velvety golden cord. --Kai Alexis Smith
