Sympathy for the Devil
Sunday
When AmEx threatens to cut me off and the IRS decides to garnish my wages, I'll simply bat my eyes (courtesy of DiorShow), twirl my hair (thanks, Oscar Blandi), and cooly explain, "The devil made me do it." I won't be off scot-free, of course, but fellow addicts will sympathize with my plight--that of a naive, weak-willed consumer who was lured in by the merchandising surrounding Twentieth Century Fox's The Devil Wears Prada.

In anticipation of the film's June 30 release, online retailers have unveiled an avalanche of merch that will appeal to the beauty obsessed at various levels of the corporate food chain. The Devil Wears Prada Tendre Set ($65; sephora.com) is the kind of sophisticated woodsy scent I would wear if I were fast-tracked to a fabulous editor-in-chief post. For disenchanted assistants who dream of becoming fashion czars (and who would surely wield their newfound power more judiciously than that meanie Miranda), there's the Angels Wear Dior Set ($50), complete with muted eye-shadow palette, sweetly hued gloss, and uber-flirty black mascara. And no matter which rung of the editorial ladder you're on, if you plan to continue career-climbing at a major glossy, Oscar Blandi's Girl on the Go set ($30) and Sephora's Devil Wears Prada Train Case ($40) are, of course, beauty essentials.

In addition, Amazon.com has launched The Devil Wears Prada boutique (amazon.com/devilwearsprada), a virtual storefront packed with clothing and accessories designed to replicate high-powered fashion-editor couture (or at least Patricia Field's interpretation of them). We love the DVF Hathaway Dress ($297), the BCBG Max Azria Doily Cotton Skirt ($158), and the Quai D'Orsay print sandals ($219). But the logic of most of the other items eludes us (the inclusion of the Jessica Simpson Barb pumps and pleather La Rue bag are especially perplexing).

To avoid going bankrupt in a season of movie-marketing madness (and to stop buyer's remorse before it happens), we strongly suggest that you indulge in only a few of the aforementioned goodies (preferably the Dior set). Or you can always, like Andrea Sachs, just say no and opt for early retirement. --Jennifer Riley

ROTFL. Did they really include the Jessica Simpson line? What does that have to do with anything?
