The Simple Life
Saturday
Minimalist fragrances are a rare breed, but oftentimes, the most memorable scents are those whose carefully curated notes are given the space to sing. Such is the case with Art of Perfumery #3 ($94 for 50ml of EDP; artofperfumery.com), a subtle, sophisticated aroma that radiates with a simplicity lacking in many of today's accords. Calling on the finest ingredients from the Comoros Islands to the fields of India, the scent is a muguet (lily of the valley) set against a white floral backdrop of jasmine and ylang-ylang, and blended with hints of sweet melon, bright orange, and sparkling aquatic notes. The result is the olfactory equivalent of sheer serenity, conjuring images of a lush garden after a summer rain shower.

For those unfamiliar with Art of Perfumery, it's a new range of fragrances and scented products created in the perfume capital of the world, Grasse, France. In an effort to produce scents of unparalleled quality and beauty, the company recruited a team of master perfumers, giving them the complete creative freedom to create their dream accords without having to bend their vision to satisfy the mass market. Because of their contractual obligations, the perfumers remain anonymous, but regardless which moonlighting maestro is responsible, #3 is a standout summer fragrance that's also available in room spray and candle form. Come fall, try my other Art of Perfumery favorite, #5--a rich Oriental symphony with a few modern twists. --Marlen Harrison
