Come Slither
Wednesday
According to Brazilian legend, the mango flower produces a nectar that lures the serpent to taste infinite bliss. In Roberto Cavalli's world, the snake is a talisman of good luck. So with his latest fragrance, Serpentine ($65; robertocavalli.net), the designer combines both of these themes in a single accord that's distinctive, long-lasting, and deliciously seductive. Combined with mandarin and artemisia, the mango flower creates a sweet, tempting opening that gives way to a complex and unlikely mix of sweet, green, floral, and spicy middle notes (Tahitian tiare, violet leaves, frangipani, and black pepper) and warm basenotes (sandalwood, tolu balm, and amber). Unlike its namesake, the scent, encased in a sleek bottle featuring two intertwined snakes, is never venomous or overpowering--just unmistakably feminine, dangerously alluring, and sure to attract good fortune. --Kai Alexis Smith
