Triple Play
Tuesday
Splash on most fragrances with abandon, and you'll smell more like a brothel than a budding flower. But Marc Jacobs's new limited-edition scents are specially designed to be applied generously allover. Although body splashes have been familiar to drugstore shelves since Jean Naté, Making a Splash marks the concept's first major foray into the luxury market and the best-smelling incarnation we've tested to date. The collection includes three summer-inspired scents—Rain, Grass, and Cotton ($65 each; bloomingdales.com)—each encased in a oversize glass bottle (so you can douse head to toe, rather than dab on pulse points). If you do prefer to spritz, however, you're in luck: In addition to the screw-on top, each bottle comes with a separate pump.

Our favorite of the trio is Rain, a sweet, aquatic blend of strawberry, cypress, tropical flowers, wet woods, and musk. Unlike some marine aromas, Rain is not only clean and cooling but also unmistakably feminine—a versatile and addictive summer scent that fetched compliments from both men and women. Meanwhile, Grass, a mix of wildflowers and white muguet that dries down to woods and musks, smells the most like its namesake of the three. The olfactory equivalent of a freshly cut, dewy field, the fragrance is optimistic, refreshing, and, apparently, especially appealing to men. The most intriguing, at least on paper, is Cotton, a mix of fresh linen, peaches, citrus, and fresh flowers with basenotes of woods, musk, and white suede. During our testing, the scent varied greatly depending on the wearer (although this is true of every accord, we found the difference particularly dramatic in this case), with results ranging from chemical and generic to warm, distinctive, and lovely. In all cases, and unlike nearly every cosmetic, the trio requires no moderation, making warm-weather fragrance application virtually foolproof. —Tara Mattarazzo

I'm totally with you on this. I love Rain, its beautiful and I love the bottle. It's such a nice change from all the hyper girly packaging. I haven't tried Cotton or Grass yet but plan to soon.
