Star Scents
Wednesday
These days, virtually every celebrity—from A-lister to box-office poison—has his or her own fragrance. But rarely are those scents so tempting that you could imagine them being mass-produced without a marketing tie-in. Fortunately, there are a few accords whose olfactory appeal actually lives up to the hype. Although I haven't always been a fan of Jennifer Lopez's fragrances (or her movies, for that matter), with Love at First Glow ($42; sephora.com), J.Lo has finally hit all the right notes. Fresh, flirty, and versatile, the scent features Italian bergamot, neroli de Provence, osmanthus, freesia, blond woods, musk, and vanilla. The notes that linger longest are Georgia peach, pink jasmine, and wild rose—an exuberant combo that inspired dozens of compliments when we wore it. (Our only reservation is the packaging, which takes its cue from the rhinestone-studded craze of a few years back, so don't say we didn't warn you).

Another celebrity fragrance we keep coming back to is Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker ($48; nordstrom.com), a warm, sexy scent with topnotes of mandarin, bergamot, lavender, and apple martini that give way to patchouli, paper-whites, and orchid, and basenotes of white amber, cedar, and musk. Unlike most celeb scents, Lovely is anything but bland; in fact, it's so alluring that I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes the leap from celebrity launch to fragrance classic. Still, with all new and expected star releases—from Naomi Campbell, Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, Paris Hilton, Hilary Duff, Danielle Steele, Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie, Britney Spears, Kimora Lee Simmons, Marilyn Manson, Kiss, and more—it's likely to face some competition. —Tara Mattarazzo
