French Correction
Saturday
Even if you’re not smoking, drinking to excess, skipping sleep, or crying for hours over a broken heart (which means you’re a better person than I am), at some point, the skin around your eyes will start to change—and trend that, sadly, will continue to accelerate ever so slightly with each passing year. The difference is subtle but unmistakable, and it sneaks up on you when you’re least expecting it: One day you suddenly realize you’ve been looking sleepy for weeks; the next, you catch glimpses of yourself in the office bathroom mirror and wonder why don’t look as cute as you did when you left the house in the morning. Before you know it, you’re adrift in a dizzying array of eye creams at the cosmetics counter, wondering whether you need a formula for surface wrinkles, deep creases, puffiness, dehydration, or dark circles. At this point, if you’re anything like me, you buy one version—the most expensive one—and promptly exit the store (so you can get home, light a cigarette, and take a swig of wine, of course). Then you use it for a while, see no difference, and think, “Maybe I should’ve bought the other one….”

Completely confused as to which eye cream to invest in next (and thoroughly loving my wine and cigarettes), I was encouraged when I spotted Sampar Splendid Eyes Elation ($58; beauty.com). Not only was it developed in France (yes, yes, they love their wine and smoke like chimneys)—it was designed to detoxify and decongest the skin surrounding the eye contour, soothe bags and dark circles, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with the help of natural peptides and extracts like anise seed, cornflower water, and chestnut. After two weeks of testing, I started to notice a decidedly different kind of change—my eyes weren’t puffy every morning, I didn’t have to apply concealer chronically throughout the day, and I actually looked rested. Coincidence? Perhaps, but I doubt it. The placebo effect? Not likely, considering the bags I was lugging around. Whatever Spendid Eyes’ secret is, I’m just thrilled not to have to rethink the issue again. Its cool gel texture is a nice change from the typical greasy cream, and a little goes a long way, so the container will last for a while. And best of all, I don’t feel the least bit guilty ordering my third glass of Bordeaux. —Gigi
