Shanghai Surprise
Friday
Inspired by her journeys to Thailand, Russia, and China, runway darling Nanette Lepore recently unveiled her second fragrance, Shanghai Butterfly ($58; sephora.com)—a lush, sexy blend that has quickly become one of my favorite new scents. The aroma was created by Ungerer and Co. master perfumer Hugh Spencer, who blended topnotes of lemon slice, mandarin, spicy carnation, and green snow apple for a crisp, sophisticated opening. From there, middle notes of jasmine, lily of the valley, gardenia, and crimson whisper rose reveal themselves, and after the drydown, Siberian musk, cedar, sandalwood, and blonde woods emerge to balance, but not dominate, the aroma’s tart opening bite. The bottle (a semicircular jade casing similar in shape to that of Lepore’s first fragrance) is embellished with butterflies, flowers, fans, and a flirty gold tassel—playful packaging that both conveys the designer’s East-meets-West aesthetic and complements the complexity of the accord. —Kai Alexis Smith
