Planet Chic

From solar heating to computer recycling, innovations aimed at protecting the planet have struck a chord with the consumer conscience. For the sartorially inclined, the most intriguing eco-conscious innovation is earth-friendly fashion. Although the first generation of these products seemed like a contradiction in terms—where exactly was the fashion?—the latest breed of garments made from recycled materials is surprisingly stylish. Ekologic's one-of-a-kind Pink Cuff and Collar ($68; ekologic.com) is constructed from recycled cashmere sweaters and, as company owner Kathleen Tesnakis explains, inspired by her home in Troy, New York (“the birthplace of the detachable collar,” she says). Enamore's Handmade Forties Style Dress ($135.00; thenaturalstore.co.uk) proves that hemp isn’t just for hippies. “For me, using hemp is my way of making a positive contribution to the planet,” says Jenny McPherson, the brand’s designer and owner. And for those who can afford to splurge, check out the Navy Cotton Jersey Jacket from Project Alabama ($1,450; projectalabama.com, shown)—a beautifully embellished spring arrival that’s handmade from both new and recycled fabrics. As with all of Project Alabama’s garments, the jacket reflects the brand’s motto, “Life is in the details.” —Kai Alexis Smith
