Freeze Frame

Ever since the shellaced hair helmet went the way of the Rubik’s Cube, women have relied on a better breed of finishing sprays for a hold that’s supple instead of scary. And these days, the options go far beyond flexible or firm hold: Chances are, your hair spray works harder than you do. Wella’s Liquid Hair Brilliant Spray Gel ($10; beautydeals.net) offers the best of both worlds, combining the hold of a finishing spray with the texture and lift of a gel, while Graham Webb’s Halo Secure Firm Hold Hairspray ($14; beautydeals.net) does double-duty too, protecting against UV rays and frizz-inducing humidity.

There are also several options designed to improve the condition and color of your tresses, such as ThermaSilk Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4; drugstore.com), which contains heat-activated moisturizers that turn grueling blowouts into conditioning treatments. Packed with bamboo, lotus flower, and water lily extracts, Cibu’s versatile Pho Finish ($12.50; cibuinternational.com) offers a spicy vanilla scent and vitamin B to soothe strands, while John Frieda’s Brilliant Brunette Shining Hold and Sheer Blonde Crystal Clear ($5.19 each; drugstore.com) add shine and illuminate color for brown-haired beauties and platinum princesses respectively. (Redheads are out of luck, though, since the Radiant Red line doesn’t include a hair spray.)

Meanwhile, the Modern Organic Products (MOP) Glisten Finish Spray ($13; gwbeauty.com, shown) wants to save your hair and the world: Certified organic ingredients, like wheat proteins and orange peel, nourish hair without harming the environment. And if you just wish life were a little easier, L’Oreal’s Studio Line Fast Forward finishing spray ($4; drugstore.com) dries in seconds for a precise, natural hold—and more time to relax. Cibu's Pho Finish is really, really good. I used it to flat iron and the results are amazing. No frizz or flyways all day!
