Find of the Week: Grab Bag
Thursday
We all know womankind’s quintessential existential question has nothing to do with Hamlet and his horribly unfashionable way of thinking. It isn’t so much about being or not being, but what you’re adorning your being with. Listen up, my dear Rosencrantzes and Guildensterns, because the real conundrum at hand is: black bag or brown? If you’re flaunting femme fatale all-noir down to your Swarovski-sequined stilettos, can you possibly swing a completely colorless clutch without taking yourself way too seriously? And what about those occasions when you feel like slipping into your baby blue–and-white Puma sneaks? Then what do you do?

The answer lies in allowing yourself to partake in a little bit of whimsy with a cute, colorful, super-practical tote—a wardrobe wink, if you will—like those designed by Italian fashion personality Elio Fiorucci for his Love Therapy by Elio Fiorucci line. The sturdy fabric carry-alls come in a variety of shades and variations on the traditional, geometrical tote style that evokes your second-grade teacher. And all are either embroidered, sequined or printed with sweet, smile-provoking designs, like a rainbow of butterflies against a sunburst backdrop or a gang of the line’s mascot garden gnomes.

With their amply long handles, there’s no chance of them doing that annoying bag thing: slipping off the shoulder and down into the crook of the elbow. And just think of all the must-haves beauty addicts can stuff into the spacious dimensions. The totes (€8-28, depending on the intricacy of the design and materials) are ubiquitous in Verona, Italy, where a Fiorucci store occupies prime property in the downtown shopping district, but the official Love Therapy story is in Milan on Corso Europa near the very picturesque Piazza San Babila. If a trip to the fashion capital isn’t in your immediate future, similarly hip totes can be found throughout the United States at select bag boutiques. Strap on your sneakers (or your three-inch spikes), and head out on the hunt! —Giordana Segneri
