A Brand Grows in Brooklyn
Wednesday
One of the hottest beauty lines on the market, Carol’s Daughter has been featured on Oprah and The Today Show, and its investors include Jay-Z, Tommy Mottola, Will Smith, and spokesmodel Jada Pinkett Smith. But it’s not just another Hollywood venture, according to founder Lisa Price, who refers to her loyal customers as “friends of the family”—instead, Carol’s Daughter has always been a labor of love. The Brooklyn native, who got her start brewing perfumes in her kitchen sink, turned her hobby into a business in 1993 when she opened the first Carol’s Daughter boutique in Fort Greene. Brooklyn beauty addicts fell head over heels for Price’s all-natural bath and body products, and the brand quickly garnered a cult following. Since that time, Carol’s Daughter has expanded its offerings to comprise something for everyone—from men’s fragrances to maternity skin-care products to kids’ bubblegum bath gels. And there’s more on the horizon: After opening a flagship location in Harlem in September and with plans to roll out more this year, Carol’s Daughter just completed a deal with Sephora, which will sell the cosmetics both online and in 28 of its brick-and-mortar locations. Our brand picks include the Mango Body Butter ($25; carolsdaughter.com, shown), a heavenly scented hydrating cream, and the Tui Shea Butter Hair Smoothie ($10), a superrich conditioning treatment that tames damaged strands instantly. —Erika Villani
