Strictly Ballroom
Monday
When Dancing with the Stars premiered last year on ABC, I immediately pegged it for a train wreck—a Surreal Life (sans the sleaze appeal) meets American Idol (without the cultural relevance). After all, who in their right mind would tune in each week to watch a bunch of washed-up celebs compete in a dull ballroom battle? As it turns out, 17 million viewers did exactly that, and six months later, Americans are continuing to sign up for ballroom-dancing lessons in droves—a craze you can still get it on before season two debuts on Monday night.

Beyond the obvious benefits of learning how to twist and twirl like a pro (you’ll look cool on the dance floor, rather than resembling a gawky promgoer), ballroom dancing helps to build muscle, improve flexibility, and promote physical stamina. And then there’s the couture: High-society brides and red-carpet walkers are now donning ballroom-inspired gowns, while the spring 2006 shows saw a daring resurgence of thigh-high slits and feathers. If none of this inspires you to make the leap and actually enroll in a class, remember, ladies: If John O’Hurley can do it, so can you! — Marissa Kristal
