State-of-the-Art Skin Care
Tuesday
When a product is being billed as “the first true cosmeceutical,” beauty addicts take notice. And the Prevage Anti-Aging Treatment ($150; nordstrom.com) seems to be backed with both the science and clinical trials to support its bold claims. Created by Elizabeth Arden and Allergan Dermatology (the makers of Botox), Prevage is the over-the-cosmetics-counter version of PrevageMD, which has been available through dermatologists for about a year. Both formulas contain Idebenone, a bioengineered antioxidant compound that mimics the body’s own fight against free radicals, providing cell protection and repair. First developed by a Japanese pharmaceutical company, Idebenone has been used since 1986 to protect pre-transplant organs and treat degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. In the early 90s, a group of German scientists discovered that Idebenone could also renew and safeguard dull, sun-damaged skin, and so the cosmeceutical was born. The new Prevage contains .5 percent Idebenone—half the concentration of physician-strength PrevageMD, which, according to the company, offers the same long-term effectiveness with a lower chance of irritation. In a six-week clinical study, Prevage was found to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by 27 percent, while skin hydration was improved by 37 percent. With years of scientific studies in their favor, Elizabeth Arden and Allergan are confident that Prevage will provide “proof...not promises.” And at almost a hundred dollars an ounce, it had better! Thank you for posting this blog. I saw Prevage the other day at the store, but couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. This explains everything. :)
