Drawing the Line
Thursday
In addition to suffering from acne that should’ve ceased with the transition from beanpole to billowy curves, the worst thing about being 26 and having oily skin is that my eyeliner refuses to stay put. You name it, I’ve tried it—from liquid eyeliners so hearty you’d think I was smearing stew under my eyes to pencils with drawing capabilities so dramatic they’d impress a Renaissance master. After years of testing, I was convinced that returning home after a night on the town with perfectly silhouetted, smudgefree peepers was the stuff of urban legend. So when the saleswoman at the M.A.C. counter assured me that the brand’s Fluidline eyeliner ($13.50; maccosmetics.com) was the solution I’d been searching for, I couldn’t help but scoff, “We’ll see about that.” But when I applied the gel formula in Blitz & Glitz, a dark shimmery gray, using M.A.C.’s small angled brow brush, I was pleasantly surprised. Tidier than a liquid and silkier than a pencil, it went on sleek and smooth. For those who like a thick, hard line, Fluidline definitely delivers; if you prefer a smudgier look, you can soften the edge by smudging it with your finger before the gel dries. Once it has dried, the liner is set, ensuring flawlessly outlined, party-perfect eyes that last until the wee hours of the morning. —Marissa Kristal
