Moonwalker
Tuesday
Who knew that when gawky Napoleon Dynamite stepped on screen donning a pair of bulky, bubble-toed moon boots, the world of haute couture would follow? But just a year later, nearly every posh brand under the sun has put its own twist on the astrochic trend. Of course, aside from thick platforms and a widened toe that resembles NASA’s original space boot, this modish footwear bears little relation to the endeavors of actual astronauts (Neil Armstrong wouldn’t have had much luck strolling the lunar surface in them). Nevertheless, they can be surprisingly versatile here on earth: Wear them with your jeans in, or slide them over a pair of lycra leggings (yes, they’re back in vogue, too).

Pucci’s funkadelic version ($250; bergdorfgoodman.com) may inspire you to do the hustle in the snow, while Dior’s sleeker, more urbane iteration ($295; neimanmarcus.com) will appeal even to sophisticated ladies. The season’s most coveted adaptations, Marc by Marc Jacobs’s ski boots, have been sold out at most sellers since September, but you can still snag a yellow Apre pair ($180; jildorshoes.com, shown) or the quilted-satin version ($195; shoes.com). If your wallet’s not nearly as hefty as these boots appear to be, check out Tecnica, whose colorful boots (most priced at $129; snowshack.com) are decidedly more durable than their catwalking counterparts. If that’s still too much of a splurge, check out Roxy’s retro-raver version ($70; nordstrom.com) or Khombu’s cyber-Snowbunny line ($56; zappos.com). The best part? This futuristic footwear is more than just high fashion—it’s functional, too. Made with water-repellent nylon and lots of insulation, they’ll keep your feet dry and warm when you’re trudging through the snow and last you for many winters to come. —Marissa Kristal
