Back in Black
Monday

Calling all minimalism enthusiasts and goth girls! Spring, chiefly known for its pretty colors and jovial prints, took a hit of attitude on the runways when several designers opted for all black. Gucci, Alexander McQueen, and Behnaz Sarafpour (above) created streamlined, neo-noir looks, while Chloé and YSL Rive Gauche used the monochromatic classic to showcase intense proportions. The sexiest of all colors didn’t always stand alone, though. Black teamed with white on several runways, making for a stylish, high-impact duo—a pairing that proved sophisticated at Maurizio Pecoraro (and again at Sarafpour) and decidedly wilder at Chanel and Michael Kors. On others, its sharp mood was softened with cream, conveying an antique-lingerie-like sweetness at Alberta Ferretti and Moschino. —Carla Gonzalez-Hart
