Top hairstylists, makeup artists, and beauty gurus answer your questions.

Q: My stylist never gets my hair quite right. How can I get her to understand the look I want?

An effective working relationship between a client and hairstylist begins with good communication. To start, make sure she is aware of your expectations and ideas, but also be open to hearing her thoughts on what she feels is achievable and what she feels is unrealistic. Along with telling her what you want, it’s equally important to tell her what you don’t want. In addition, pictures can be a useful tool in eliminating any confusing terminology and helping you both to visualize your final look. If it takes more than one picture to get your point across, then so be it—you may like the back of a style in one picture, the front in another, and the highlight colors and patterns in a third. Most important, always trust your instincts. If you don’t feel your stylist understands your goals or you aren’t on board with her recommendations, speak up so you can both feel confident about proceeding. If you tried all this, and you still don’t feel comfortable, it’s time to find a new stylist!

Hairstylist Gina Lepera-Murphy can be found behind the chair at Studio Blue in Dayton, Ohio. Her background includes training with Wella, Davines, and John Sahag, pioneer of the “dry cut,” as well as a variety of extensions certifications.
