Q: I go running three times a week, but I’m still not losing weight. What am I doing wrong?

When it comes to being active, an important equation comes into play: comparing calories burned to calories consumed. While you may be running three times a week, you need to look at how long you’re running during those times and your daily nutrition to understand why you’re not achieving your desired weight loss. To promote weight loss and overall good health, the average person should be physically active for at least 30 to 60 minutes a day. What most people don’t realize is that in weight management, the role nutrition plays is larger than the role working out does.

I suggest you start running more frequently throughout the week for longer periods of time. Add one to two days of toning exercises, such as yoga, Pilates, or weight training, to your routine, and watch your eating habits. Have a large, protein-rich, healthy breakfast, and eat five to six small meals a day, consisting of many fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed foods. In addition, be sure to drink lots of water and never eat before bedtime. Most important, don’t give up—just one positive change in your lifestyle starts to pave the path toward a healthier, happier, more radiant you.
