Q: Every time I use a highlighter, I end up looking like a shimmery disco ball. How can I create a subtler effect? The first key to using a highlighter is choosing one that doesn’t have too much sparkle—a nice translucent shimmer is the best option. There are several highlighters from M.A.C. Cosmetics that I love. M.A.C. Pigment in Vanilla is a little pot of shimmery powder that lasts a lifetime and can be mixed with everything, and M.A.C.’s Cream Color Base in Improper Copper (a peachy color with gold undertones) and Hush (a pink with silvery undertones) look great on all skin tones. After you’ve applied foundation or powder and blush, add these products sparingly to your cheekbones and/or brow bones, using a clean finger to dab and blend. And finally, too avoid sparkle overdose, stick with a non-shimmer lip gloss or lipstick.
