Q: After visiting a tanning salon, I developed some whitish spots on my back and chest. What are they, and how can I remove them?

I don’t condone the use of tanning beds, but that said, it sounds like you’ve developed tinea versicolor—a condition that’s basically caused by an overgrowth of a yeast called pityrosporum, which is a member of our normal skin flora and the same organism that causes dandruff and infantile cradle cap. This yeast thrives on sweat, usually is noted during spring and summer, and causes a temporary decrease in skin pigment in the affected area. This becomes more noticeable after exposure to sun or, in some instances, the ultraviolet light of a tanning bed, because normal skin tans and affected skin doesn't.

This rash can be easily treated by using an over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo as a body wash for two to three weeks, although in some cases, a prescription cream or tablet may be called for. As always, the best way to address concerns about your skin is to visit your dermatologist.
